Health & Fitness
Apps that measure something about your body, or plan something for it.
What is in this category
Running and cycling trackers, strength logs, sleep and recovery scores, food diaries, guided workouts. The range inside this category is wider than in any other: some of these apps are a stopwatch with a graph attached, and some want to be your coach, your nutritionist and your alarm clock at once.
The dividing line worth noticing early is whether an app records what you did or tells you what to do next. Both are useful. They are rarely useful in the same week, and buying the second when you wanted the first is the most common way people end up with a subscription they stop opening.
Four things worth checking
- Does it work without the subscription?A lot of fitness apps log for free and charge for the plan. Find out which half you actually want before the trial ends.
- Can you get your data out?Years of runs or weights are worth something. Export in a normal format is what makes switching possible later.
- Does it need a wearable? Some are built around a watch or a strap and are thin without one. Others do everything from the phone in your pocket.
- How loud is it?Streaks, badges and daily nudges suit some people and put others off inside a fortnight. That is a preference, not a flaw.
Questions worth asking first
- What am I actually measuring, and will I still look at it in a month?
- Am I buying a tracker or a coach?
- Does it read from the health store my phone already keeps, or does it build its own island of data?
