What is in this category
Single-purpose apps that solve one annoyance and then get out of the way. The good ones are often years old, rarely updated because they do not need to be, and cost a few pounds once rather than a few pounds a month.
Utilities are also where permissions deserve the closest reading anywhere on Appiqon. A unit converter has no reason to want your contacts, and a scanner has no reason to want your location. When a small tool asks for something large, that is the product telling you what it is.
Four things worth checking
- What does it ask for, and why?Match every permission to a feature you can name. If you cannot name one, that is your answer.
- Does it work offline?Most utilities have no reason to need a connection. One that does is doing something else as well.
- Is there a one-off price?Plenty of small tools still sell outright. For something you use twice a month, that is usually the better deal.
- Is it still maintained?Check the last update. An old, stable utility is fine. An abandoned one that handles your files is not.

- Is this touching files or passwords I would not want to lose?
- Would I rather pay once than subscribe?
